St. Paul`s Church and the Bell of Hope.

St. Paul`s Church it was one of the first place that i`ve been here in New York and i was so happy and sad at the same time  because you can find there a lot of memories from the people that died during the 9/11 attacks like: photos, an American flag with the names of all people that died, a small bed with ted bears where the ordinary people and the rescuers used to take a rest after hours of hard work trying to find and rescue the people. The bell of hope symbolizes the triumph of hope over tragedy. I have to say that i`m very happy to be here cause this is a great opportunity to improve our English and learn a little bit more about the American Culture and the American Way of life.

I learned in this week...

Hello, everybody!

This is the first time that I write in a blog. So, keep calm! This will be cool to me, certainly.

During this first week of studies in NY, we study techniques to paraphrase and summarize texts, reading strategies, idiomatic expressions and the correct pronunciation of verbs in the Simple Past.

Our teacher, Donna, has a lot of patience with us.

Personally, I'm still feeling difficulty to understand and be understood. My listening is not so good, but I hope this reality change with the passing of weeks, or rather, until the next week.

Lu.

In Memorial 9/11

I visited the 9/11 Memorial during that first week of studies in New York. The Memorial is a beautiful place though made me feel very sad.
I know many people have asked this question, but I also ask myself: Why?
My sincere condolences to all the people who somehow missed someone they loved.

Visiting New York Public Library

One of the best part until now, I loved visiting the exhibition The ABC of it...It took me years  ago and I see how much  our children are losing...I`m weak and couldn`t hold  my tears.
" The ABC of It is an examination of why children’s books are important: what and how they teach children, and what they reveal about the societies that produced them. Through a dynamic array of objects and activities, the exhibition celebrates the extraordinary richness, artistry, and diversity of children’s literature across cultures and time". Curator: Leonard S. Marcus.

Cultural Excursion tour of New York Public Library

Today we did a Cultural Excursion tour of New York Public Library and the surroundings. There we had a wonderful explanation of the history and about the function.
I chose this picture, taken at Bryant Park (near the Library),  because it's shows us the beauty of the architecture of the buildings in New York and also the difference cultural and education of the people that keep the conservation buildings and clean streets and parks.Unfortunately in the Brazil cities are dirty and the buildings all defaced. This is a clash of civilization.

Today we went to The New York Public Library, I ´ve never seen so big library, amazing
we had a tour guide her name is  Ulla a very kind person, they showed many
interesting places in the library and told us about many important writers I enjoyed a lot our
visit, after, we walked a lot in 5th ave, we went in Brasilian Bank and Wax museum Madame Tussauds.

Competence and kindness together!

Being here with this so lovely staff has been so pleasurable. In fact, I wouldn`t be able to describe my fellings during these last days `cause everybody here is so gentle, so kind and so competent too. I think this program is very well detailed. We`ve got classes, conversation classes and during all time we can improve our English knowledgements talking each other. Yesterday afternoon I had my first conversation class with Mrs Sue who was very clear and kind with my group, Rafael, Laudelina and me. We talked a lot about different subjects which were family, jobs, likes  and dislikes. Sue is very lovely because while we were talking she was showing us the most useful idiomatic expressions and we learn more and more. I am so glad with all I`ve been living here and I`m sure when I come to my home back I`ll be a better teacher that I used to be before coming here.
Hi everybody!!!
I`m sure everybody is living amazing days in New York city!!  This is a great experience and a unique oportunity for  increasing our knowledgements. Here we can learn about cultural aspects which books can`t show us.

English fellows taken a photo with their Adviser

It's been very cool my stay in the Unites States, I even know others city that large beautiful country and one of my dreams was to know this famous city. I am very happy. And the most excited it all are new friendship that are made, because the hard truth is that this life we only can brings our memories. In short " We are made of the same stuff that dreams are made of, and our little life is completed with a sleeps" ( Shakespeare, The Tempest). So be intense while it lasts.

Hi folks!
I'm Marise Schneider, from Santarem-Para-Brazil. I work as a teacher at three public schools in Brazil. I give classes for people of different levels and ages in my city. At the moment, I am in Manhattan, New York, to take an English course and improving my performance as a teacher. I'm so grateful with Capes, Fulbright Commission, American Embassy in Brazil and specially with the Brazilian Government to be here.
My purposes at St. John's University is to study hard and to know about the American culture and landmarks.
On June, 24th we had our first English Refinement Class and we learned an important issue about accent with our professor, Ann Marie. She told us that we should not worry about our accent, because our accent is our identity. I am sure that we will learn many important and interesting things. I am very grateful to participate in the PDPI.

The Beginnig !!!

Finally we arrived at St Jhon's University, we were well received and the classes are incredible. I believe that with this new experience I can definitely improve the quality of my work and try to do things differently from now on. Our teacher Ann Marie said: "I'll try my best to solve your problem." Now I feel confident. I hope to achieve the course objectives.

Wake up guys, "NY never sleeps"!

PDPI SUMMER 2013 ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY - MANHATTAN, NEW YORK.

Our first day (morning) of course - June 24th - a wonderful breakfast with director, coordinator PDPI, teachers and others.

My dear friends Edilaine and Alice from RO too. We are enjoying the city. How don`t like it???

First tour in New York: Chinatown

Start the Summer PDPI with an interesting tour in China Town was fantastic. From that opportunity was possible to understand better how is important to know English in a global community. For us, English teachers, knowing more about the culture of different people in the world is really important.

Hi, I´m very happy in participate in this program, to be in the USA was a dream to me since I was a child and now it cames true. I´m learning a lot in our English course, I met new friends others teachers from Brazil
I´m enjoying my stay here.

     Good Afternoon People,

My classes have been very much interesting at St. Johns university, because I have learned  a bit about the history of the NY city, famous landmarks in Manhattan such as Irish hunger memorial ;  Manhattan`s river and others.

The WTC 09/11 Memorial

This is the WTC 09/11 memorial, it's in memory of the victims of the World Trade Center that died in semptember 11, 2001. This is a place to think about our lives. Today we must be good, but sometimes no. We have to think that we must do the best we can. Too many lives fall apart that day...Families were destroyed in a second. The memorial is so beatiful, but on the other hand is sad. The water falling in the deep hole seems like tears from that who died or our tears crying for that who went.

Hi St Johns,
It is a pleasure to be here sharing and receiving knowledge from our teachers from Manhattan University. It is a great opportunity to improve our English anytime, anywhere in New York city. Be here means for me an incredible and unforgettable expereience that I had never thought before.
Some times ago I couldn`t see meaning teaching English without some real practice. How can I teach something to my students if  I not even know. Teach a foreing language  is necessary you live the language face to face.
I am thankful for everybody who gave us the great opportunity and of course believed us.

Monday, June 24

We went walk around the Manhattan's Bay and see World Trade Center Memorial, I didn't like it because I felt a bit depressed and sad, I could see how these people are strong...Great!!
I`m so thankful to be here with so much important things to learn and to do. I thank everyday for having this oportunity `cause without it it`d be much more difficult  having  so much knowledges which I think they  are extremely important also to improve my English and my literature readings. This experience  will be great in my teacher`s performance and  in my personal life too. People here are very gentle and very elegant too. It was the time of my life and the most important of it , I am in New York City, in  amazing and beautiful Manhattan, the place where  everything happens ...Briefing a new culture  has been  a very  pleasurable and  exciting experience to me since I left Brazil because it is my first time abroad.Everything is new to me...

ALICE IN THE ISLAND OF MANHATTAN!!!

Hi everybody... I'm here in NewYork too. I can't believe yet... It was my dream to stay here and I could make my dream to come true!!!
The Manhattan City is better that I'd  thought!!!
The classes are been wonderful, the professor is wonderful too.
I went twice to the Bay of Manhattan since I've arrived... the Irish Memorial is so sad, I felt a strange feeling there...
I will take advantage of this opportunity very well...  I hope that I can improve my listening, my pronounciation... I hope to improve my English all.

Dreams come true in real life, too.
I`m here in New York City.  I give Thanks a God for this. It is a wonderful experience for me.
I made new friends, saw beautiful places, visited historical monument and the most important of all, learned new things, because for me, THE MOST IMPORTANT ISN`T WHAT YOU KNOW BUT, WHAT YOU CAN LEARN.
I'm so happy to be here in Manhattan, New York taking part of a great program called PDPI. A program that help Brazilian'  English teachers improve the language. It's a great opportunity that American Embassy, Brazilian Government and Capes - Fullbright gave to us. Manhattan is beautiful, clean, a place with nice and polite people.
